The Science of Roller Skating

Kick off the year with The Science of Roller Skating! Students will jump into Roller Skating 101 as they discover the science behind wheels, motion, balance, friction, and skating through our reverse-engineering skate lesson and handouts. In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, we’ll also explore the diverse people and cultural influences that have helped shape skating and our communities. Through hands-on activities and rink-based exploration, students will discover that science isn’t just something you learn, it’s something you can experience, move through, and have fun with!

You, Me, & Gravity

Roller Skating 102! What keeps you balanced on skates? Why do you wobble, lean, or fall? Students will explore gravity, balance, and the center of mass through interactive challenges and introductory skating activities. They’ll experiment with body position, movement, and stability while discovering how forces affect the way we skate. In recognition of Native American Heritage Month, students will also have an opportunity to connect learning with culture, community, and an understanding of the world around us. Get ready to test gravity—and your balance—on wheels!

Artistic Skating & The Figure 8

It’s time to get creative on wheels! Students will discover the fascinating connection between art, mathematics, movement, and skating as they are introduced to artistic skating and figure-8 patterns with mini skating lessons and hands-on challenges inspired by motion, sequences, and patterns. Students will explore how creativity and precision work together. Whether they’re navigating a figure-8 or solving a Slinky-and-Domino challenge, students will see how simple movements can create impressive designs. Come explore the art of motion!

Art or Architect? Skate & Rink Design

Put on your artist and architect hats! This month, students will explore how STEAM influences the design of roller skates and skating rinks. From shape and structure to space, safety, and function, students will discover how designers turn ideas into real-world experiences. Using hands-on model-building activities, they’ll create their own skate and rink concepts while thinking like engineers, architects, and artists. It’s a creative opportunity to imagine the rink of the future—and discover how thoughtful design can make movement more exciting!

Skate-O-Vate: Engineering in Motion

Celebrate Black History Month through innovation, engineering, and movement! Students will become creative problem-solvers as they investigate how roller skates work and discover the engineering behind their design. Through reverse-engineering challenges, students will examine components, think critically about how things fit together, and imagine ways to improve them. Then, it’s time to put their ideas into motion with exciting relay races that encourage teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving. Get ready to Skate-o-vate and discover how engineers turn challenges into possibilities!

Light Up the Rink

Let there be light! This month, students will explore the technology, science, art, and mathematics of color and lighting at the rink. They’ll investigate how colors mix, how light interacts with surfaces, and how lighting can transform an environment. Through creative projects such as color-wheel exploration and an I-Spy color challenge, students will explore all the colors at the rink. Students will discover how technology and creativity work together to create spaces that are exciting, expressive, and full of energy.
