Introduction to Roller Skating

Waivers: All visitors participating in roller skating must complete a waiver. Waivers for minors must be completed by a parent or guardian. Any individual who does not have a waiver on file will not be able to skate.

About: Our introductory class is a progressive, 4-week course focusing on the development of basic skating skills and safe skating practices. Classes take place on specified Saturdays between 12 and 1 PM. The Intro Program is divided into four levels: Youth I/II, Adult I/II, Youth III, and Adult III. Youth courses are for skaters 15 and younger. Adult courses are for 16 and over. To enroll in the Level III class you must have successfully completed the Level I/II class or have instructor permission. While all class levels share the skating floor during instructional time, each level will work with its own dedicated USA Roller Sports certified coach.

Course Dates: At the time you purchase your course admission, you will select the 1st week of your 4-week course. Some 4-week courses have break-weeks due to holidays. 2022/2023 course dates are:

  • SEPT 30-OCT 21
  • OCT 28-NOV 18 (no class 11/25)
  • DEC 2-JAN 6 (no class 12/23 or 12/30)
  • JAN 13-FEB 3
  • FEB 10-MAR 2
  • MAR 9-APR 13 (no class 3/23 or 3/30)
  • APR 20-MAY 11

Class Time: When registering for a Level I/II class, you will choose from 12-12:25 PM or 12:30-12:55 PM for your section timeslot. You must attend the same timeslot each week. Adult Level III starts weekly at 12 PM and Youth Level III starts weekly at 12:30 PM. Skaters registered for the 12-12:25 PM section must clear the main skating floor from 12:30-1 PM, but may practice on the side floors while waiting for the Open Skate Session to begin. Skaters registered for the 12:30 timeslot may arrive at 12 PM and warm up on the side floors until their section begins, but may not enter the main floor until 12:30 PM. Please be sure to arrive a minimum of 10 minutes before the start of your timeslot to allow time to get your skates on and be ready for class to begin.

Purchasing Your Course: The number of skaters admitted per course is limited and courses sell out very quickly. To guarantee your spot you must purchase class registration online; online booking opens 90 days in advance of the first date of the course. Walk-in purchasing is subject to availability. If you wish to use a Chipper Card to book your course, call 503-233-5777 or email weborders@oakspark.com M-F between 9 AM and 4 PM a minimum of 72 hours before the first date of the course.

Refunds, Cancellations, and Absences: Your purchase is non-refundable. In cases of emergency, courses may be rescheduled by emailing weborders@oakspark.com a minimum of 72 hours before the first date of the course, as listed on your ticket. If an individual misses a class, they may join the other timeslot on another week within their 4-week course. There are no makeup days after the conclusion of the 4-week course.

Skates: Skate rental is included at no additional charge. Personal skates are welcome, subject to inspection.

Open Skate Session Admission: Your course includes admission to the 1-5 PM Open Skate Session following class each Saturday. Open Skate Admission cannot be substituted for another session date/time.

Food/Beverages: Outside food/beverages are prohibited. The Rink Cafe may not be operational during class time; vending machines are available.

Parking: Parking fees apply 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Parking fees are per day and are payable onsite via self-service parking meters or on your mobile device at t2p.mobi/oaks1905. Only credit/debit cards are accepted at the parking meters; please visit the Skate Shop to pay with cash. Parking spaces are first-come, first-served and the lot frequently fills to capacity; do not purchase your parking online until you have a parking space onsite. There are no refunds. Failure to pay the parking fee will result in penalties. Carpooling is strongly recommended.

Monthly Unlimited Permit: $13
Quarterly Unlimited Permit: $33

Peak Rates are in effect before 4:45 PM on all Saturdays, Sundays, and select holidays during the amusement park season. Monthly/quarterly permits allow for unlimited parking, subject to parking space availability at the time of arrival, and are only available online at tocite.net/oakspark/Portal. Complimentary bus parking is available when arranged in advance. The parking lot is private property and is only available to visitors of Oaks Park.  Vehicles not parked in designated parking stalls and those that block the flow of traffic will be towed at the owner’s expense. The closest bus stop is approximately 1 mile away; visit the Tri-Met trip planner to plan your route. Bike racks are available near the Roller Rink. Rates are subject to change without notice.

Warm Weather Advisory: The Roller Rink does not have A/C. The main skating floor is cooled by a swamp cooler. Rick's Cafe is air-conditioned.

Skate at Your Own Risk: Roller skating is a physical activity with an inherent risk of injury; by participating you assume the risk of injury.

Contemporary Recreation Skating

About: Our contemporary recreation skating program is a progressive, 4-week course focusing on expanding skating skills for a more enjoyable recreational skating experience. The program is divided into two levels; to participate in Level I/II skaters must be stable while skating forward and able to balance on one foot for 2 seconds; to participate in Level III skaters must be stable skating forward and backward and have the ability to balance on one foot for 5 or more seconds while skating either forwards or backward. This course is for 16 and over. The course is taught by USA Roller Sports certified coaches.

Course Dates: At the time you purchase your course admission, you will select the 1st week of your 4-week course. Some 4-week courses have break-weeks due to holidays. 2023 course dates are:

  • NOV 5-DEC 3 (no class 11/26)

Purchasing: Classes are run strictly on a drop-in basis. The number of admission tickets offered per date is limited; to guarantee admission you must purchase admission online in advance. Tickets are available for online purchase starting 90 days in advance. Walk-in purchasing is subject to availability. Admission tickets are required for everyone participating in the class. If you wish to use a Chipper Card to book your tickets, call 503-233-5777 or email weborders@oakspark.com M-F between 9 AM and 4 PM a minimum of 72 hours before the monthly event date.

Refunds and Cancellations: Skate class admission tickets are non-refundable. Tickets are only valid for the date/time printed on the ticket. In cases of emergency, the date for the ticket validity may be rescheduled by emailing weborders@oakspark.com a minimum of 72 hours before the original reservation date/time.

Age/Ability Requirements: The SoulFit class has a minimum age limit of 15 years old. Skaters must be at least 18 years of age to participate in the "Coffee Club" class. Intro to Speed Skating is for skaters 7 and older only. The Footwork Essentials class is open to all ages. Participants in all specialty classes must be comfortable with forward skating, cross-overs, and stopping.

Helmets: For the Intro to Speed Skating Class, helmets are required. You must furnish your own helmet, Oaks Park does not rent personal safety equipment.

Open Skate Admission cannot be substituted for another session date/time. "Coffee Club" and Intro to Speed Skating classes do not include Open Skate Session admission.
